What is purple pipe?

Purple pipe is a series of pipelines for reclaimed water which has been used in the San Diego region since the 1990s. Purple pipes carry recycled and treated water for non-potable uses such as landscape irrigation, industrial use and fighting fires. Unlike purified water, that water is not treated to a high enough level to be consumed as drinking water.
